Healthy Working Lives

The Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives provides expert, free and confidential advice and support to employers to help improve health and well-being in the workplace. Keeping up to date with all the latest health promotion advice, health and safety legislation or occupational health advice can be a real challenge when you are juggling lots of different responsibilities.

Healthy Working Lives provides:

  • a freephone national telephone adviceline (0800 019 2211), providing confidential advice and guidance to employers, employees and individuals at the time of the call with additional reference to services that can assist with workplace safety and health issues
  • professional advisors throughout Scotland who, where appropriate, can carry out a workplace visit to identify and give practical advice and guidance on occupational health, health promotion and safety needs in your organisation
  • a website specifically designed for employers and employees which gives information on a wide range of occupational health and safety topics and will link you with other websites that can provide additional information

Healthy Working Lives can provide free information and advice on a wide range of occupational health and safety issues including:

  • workplace health and safety regulations
  • occupational health and safety information
  • hazardous substances
  • stress
  • bullying and harassment
  • disability - reasonable adjustments
  • risk assessment
  • display screen equipment regulations
  • lone working
  • manual handling
  • health promotion
  • employee rehabilitation

What can Healthy Working Lives do for you?

As an Employer:

  • Give you free and confidential advice and guidance on occupational health, health promotion and safety issues
  • Carry out a workplace visit to identify any occupational health and safety needs in your workplace
  • Provide practical advice and solutions to any problems identified and signpost you to other relevant services

As an Employee:

  • Provide free confidential advice and guidance on a range of safety and health topics
  • If appropriate, carry out a consultation to assess any potential occupational health and safety problems
  • Give practical advice on solutions to any problems identified and signpost you to other relevant services

Healthy Working Lives also works to support those who aren't currently employed - for example, due to a period of ill health - but who want to go back to work and reap all the benefits of employment.

What Happens During a Workplace Visit?

Workplace visits are free and confidential and can be requested by calling the national adviceline free on 0800 019 2211. A Healthy Working Lives Adviser will then arrange a convenient date and time to visit your workplace.

During the visit, the Healthy Working Lives adviser will request a tour of your workplace and look at common safety and health issues as well as any arising from the specific nature of your work. The adviser will then identify areas of good practice as well as areas where improvements can be made.

Following a workplace visit, your adviser will produce a short but comprehensive report on their findings. The report will outline areas where the business could improve and highlight areas of good practice. The report will be prioritised using an easily understood traffic light system where green, amber or red areas will be listed with red areas being the most urgent.

Your adviser will arrange a follow-up visit to talk through the report, giving you practical advice on how to improve any identified areas, and refer you to organisations that may assist you further.
