A unique blend of heritage and creativity will come to life this spring as artist Rosi Robinson, a descendant of the historic Stewart family of Shambellie, returns to her ancestral home to lead a special batik workshop.
Taking place at Shambellie House in New Abbey on 18–19 April 2026, the two-day workshop offers participants the chance to learn the intricate and expressive art of batik in a setting deeply
connected to Robinson’s family history. Shambellie House has been home to the Stewart family for over four centuries, with the current house built in 1856 for William Stewart. Today, it serves as a vibrant creative centre for arts, heritage and environmental learning. Robinson’s return represents a powerful “full circle” moment - bringing contemporary textile practice into a space shaped by her ancestors.
An internationally exhibiting batik artist, Robinson has spent more than 50 years developing hercraft, teaching workshops across the UK, Europe, North America and beyond. Her work draws inspiration from global traditions, particularly from countries where batik is deeply embedded in cultural heritage, including Indonesia, Japan and China.
Speaking about her work, Robinson describes batik as both expressive and immersive: “Batik is my passion… I love doing it, exhibiting it and teaching it.”
The “Discover the Magic of Batik” workshop will introduce participants to a range of traditional and experimental techniques, including applying hot wax, creating texture through crackling, and layering vibrant dyes on fabric and paper. Beginners and experienced artists alike are welcome, with attendees expected to complete their own original batik piece by the end of the weekend.
Set within the tranquil surroundings of Shambellie House, the workshop offers more than just a creative experience - it is an opportunity to connect with place, history and artistic practice in a uniquely personal way.
